Competition for the extension of a comprehensive school in Gibloux, Farvagny (Fribourg)

Blueprint 1999
Associates: Felley, Pralong
Third Prize

Brief: 29 classrooms, 9 special rooms, 1 refectory, 2 sports halls, 1 library, a covered courtyard and an administrative block.

Built in 1983, the existing school building (which had to remain intact) had 5 classrooms, 1 sports hall, an auditorium and an administrative block.

The new four-storey building is parallel with an incline. At its lowest level, it divides the recreation area and behind a quiet tree-lined area. A covered courtyard connects the two buildings, with the pupils' entrance on the upper ground floor and the refectory on the lower (courtyard) level.

We suggested that the original building should be kept for general purposes (library, administration, etc.) and that all the original classrooms should be re-located in the new building. The sports hall was buried near the rear boundary of the property and its roof covered with a carpet of flowers. The large windows added to the façades give onto the classrooms while vertical zigzag slits light the corridors inside.
