There has been little expansion to the west of Mendrisio's old town, which is situated on a hill, due to the railway line and lack of access between the two sides of the track. Thus, the area has not been developed to its full potential and to date only a few factories have moved there.
Traffic on the major railway line between Milan and Zurich will be stepped up in the near future by (1) a rail link with Malpensa Airport and (2) the "Alptransit" service whereby the journey Milan - Zurich will take only 2 hours 40 minutes.
To offset the foreseeable inconvenience and to breathe new life into the west zone, we have suggested that a building be erected to house the railway junction. This would have several east-west passages linking the old town with the area under development.
The centre of the building would also serve as an inter-change facilitiy for both pedestrians and other people using transport such as trains, cars, postal coaches, etc...
